Early hand woven, intricately detailed, four-handled Gullah basket from the Lowcountry region of the U.S.

This basket was acquired from an estate, and I was told it was hand crafted by a young girl who attended the Penn Center (Gullah) School in St. Helena Island, S.C. Founded in 1862, the Penn Center was one of the first academic schools in the South to provide a formal education for formerly enslaved West Africans, known as The Gullah. The Penn Center closed in 1948. It now serves as a Gullah Cultural Center.

The basket has some small areas of wear,a couple very minor snags and an aged patina; no holes.

The basket has a delicateairy design featuring an openwork bottom with a geometric pattern. A fine example of early Gullah work.

It measures about 9 3/4\" x 9 1/2\" x 3.\"
