VINTAGE EGYPTIAN HAND CARVED STONE SCARAB

The featured item represents a hand carved from stone figurine/paperweight that measures approximately 2 1/2\" tall and 4 3/8\" x 3 1/4\" at the widest and longest points. It weights about 1 pound 3 ounces.

The piece is sculptured in the shape of a beetle. The base is inscribed with hieroglyph or some kind of symbolic design to form an impression seal. The scarab is drilled from end to end .

Scarabs were popular amulets in ancient Egypt that were generally either carved from stone or molded from Egyptian faience. As the featured carving is too heavy and big I would think it was made with a decorative purpose. Could be used as a paperweight or just as an attractive display. I cannot explain why the piece was drilled. I was also told that the scarab could be similar to the South American percussion instruments (like frogs) that come with a wooden stick that is rubbed across pointed teeth to produce a sound. But I personally question that theory as the beetle\'s teeth are to small and unevenly carves do I doubt a good sound will come form rubbing on them.

The item comes in overall good condition. There are no major surface damages but rather some small chips, mostly on the pointed areas and the edges. As the stone was carved totally by hand, expect some irregularities and imperfections in the shaping and the details.

The featured hand crafted Egyptian scarab will make a great addition to any collection and be an interesting display for any shelf or table!
