This is a VintageEVANSVILLE TOOL WORKS Double Bit felling axe head, straight from the timber country of southern Oregon. This axe was made for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and is so marked, along with the USFS mark. During the Great Depression, there was a CCC camp on the site of the local Reedsport High School, and these show up oncein awhile, but are rare. The city boys that joined the CCC built a lot of wonderful campgrounds, stone walls, log cabins, and so forth in the Pacific Northwest, and some are still standing. They worked hard, but were a little rough on their tools apparently. Actually, I think most of the pitting, etc. on the axe is just from the effects of time and weather. The axe head weighs 3 lbs.4.2 oz. and is8 1/2inches long. The edges are 4 inches. The axe head is wood-free, has heavy pitting on the surface. The mark, saying \"EVANSVILLE\" is readable if you know the company, but not perfect;the CCC is fading, but the USFS is clear and deepThis double bit axe is in rough condition, but is interesting from an historical perspective, especially if your father was in the CCC before WWII, as mine was. I have tried to show the axe from every angle, but if you have any questions, please ask.THANKS FOR LOOKING! (5-63)
