Sinceretiring,I find myself attending several local estate and farm sales per month, finding some of the most interesting, unusualandeven scarce finds in the back country of York and Lancaster Counties Pa. I believe thatmost oftenthe bestpickings are located in the most out of the way, obscure, small estate sales and sales where us locals are the lucky buyers, far from big cities and well known sale houses. I enjoy bringing some ofmymore interestingfinds to , giving others the opportunity to enjoy, through me, the adventures of true Pennsylvania Amish country sales and estate sales. Attributed toErhard and Söhne, Germany I am offering this outstanding Bronze box, possibly clad in copper with a rich aged patina, featuring scenes of mythical hunting, men fighting with mythical creatures, wildlife, men,women, children and babies all adorn the panels, some very graphic and violent. Each panel is different and rich in detail! The more you study it, the more you find. I have taken as many photos as allows to show you each panel as well as some highlights of the relief work. Please use the magnifying feature to look it over.
The top panel features a breathtaking hunting scene with a woman being led on a unicorn by a servant through the forest as young men both clothed and naked, carrying hunting horns, direct dogs to flush out rabbits and other small creatures. The trees above, full of birds watching the activity below. Each end panel features a man fighting with a mythical creature using clubs and shields for protection, with women and children running away in fear.
The front panel features a man and woman fighting a bear, a woman and child pointing in horror as a winged griffin makes off with an infant, followed by a man fighting it with a club. Below them is a figure hiding or sleeping in the flora. The rear panel scene shows a woman breast feeding an infant as a toddle watches from over her shoulder, two figures clutching one another as they walk, a hunter with bow and arrow taking aim at a bird and a slumbering figure in the flora below. All four feet depict a winged dolphin type creature as seen in the photos. It is unmarked, however, in researching this piece, I was able to identify this relief work design to be that ofErhard and Söhne, and dated before 1900.These figures are strange & fascinating and surely the panel scenes are telling a story.
The inside of the box still retains the original wood lining both in the base and inside the top, however the velvet that once covered the wood is gone. It could easily be relined with a velvet color of your choice or used as is. It has a small discrepancy between the legs and it does have a slight teeter to it front to back. I have studied the legs closely and none of them appears to be misplaced, bent or dented in any way, they all look identical in their shape and their angle... I don\'t know if it was manufactured this way or not. It does need to be disclosed, incase this would bother you at all. The legs may be able to be adjusted by force to get rid of this teetering, I will not attempt to do that and it is sold with this teeter as is. I\'d say it\'s less than an 8th of an inches space under the rear right leg when it is sitting level. You cannot see this readily when viewing it on display. I photographed it on a carpet and it did not teeter, but when I sat it on a level hard wood sideboard I noticed it. This wonderful piece measures 10.5\" long, 6 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall. This is very unique and would be a wonderful addition to any collection or a thoughtful gift for someone special.
