Fine set! 32 Pieces included.Some wear with age.1 knight/giraffe has missing ear.1 yellow and 1 black wood pawns have wood imperfection as chip/dip to base (see pic #9) and 1 yellow pawn has coloring wood imperfection at eye as shown.Pieces instunning condition for age, clean. No cracks, other breaks or repairs observed.No board or box included. Comes as shown pieces only.Pictures taken with flash and in natural lighting to show coloring and details. ~EXQUISITELY andmeticulously hand carved East African tribal chess pieces. Very fine carver for this set! Museum quality set. This set is truly stunning in person and finely crafted.This set is finer in quality and carving than a previousMakonde set Irecently sold. It is in stunning condition for age andthe extra attention to details in the carvingare very fine. The profiles to these pieces are magnificent. This carver was a true artist. Beautifully individually carved and true works of art. Crafted by the Makonde tribe. Figures are very stylized and unique. Circa 20th century, 1950. The pieces are solid with a beautiful feel in hand. Hand carved yellow wood and black woodprobably Ebony but could also be another blackwood used mpingo. Makonde carvers using mpingo would go into the bush to find and choose their own tree for their works of art, and cut it down themselves.

This set has so many finedetails from the small stylized ears, beautiful profiles, meticulousdetails to hair. Pieces thoughtfully carved front and back. Thatched hut asrooks, giraffe\'s as knights. Pawns headsset on small pedestals. The king and bishops have decorative head dress and the queen carries water jug. East African carved. Makonde. Mozambique.
