Please notice this is a quilt TOP: it is NOT a finished quilt or bedspread, as there is no batting or backing beneath the pieced fabrics shown in the photos.This pattern was called Patriotic Star by the Kansas City Star in 1936. We have seen it named Touching Stars as well.
Because it is the Patriotic Star pattern, the makers used red, white and blue fabrics, mostly, but as you may notice some of the \"blue\" swatches look now rather gray (pic # 8 for example). The colors might have changed with time, because we are certain this is a very old piece.
The polka dot red and white fabric seems feed sack; the other printed and striped fabrics are also, we believe, feed sack scraps.
The piecing was done by hand, tight stitching. On pic # 12 you can see the underside of this quilt top showing the hand stitching compared to a ruler.
It measures 86\" by 73\" across; the bed is a queen, 80\" by 60\".
