Brief introduction to Sumba textiles:
History and centuries of tradition have enabled the people of Sumba to refine the art of tie-dyeing skeins of thread into one of the most sophisticated textile processes in the world – known as Ikat . This ancient millennia old form of textile production has been practiced as a highly complex, technical art-form across Asia and the Middle East. I believe arguably it has reached its apogee in Indonesia and most notably in Eastern Sumba in the mid - late 20th century.
Internationally, Sumba textiles are collected as examples of the highest quality of textile design and are found in the major museums of the world, art galleries as well as the homes of fortunate private collectors. They stand as a testament to the sophistication of frequently misunderstood tribal culture as well as a genealogical and historical representation of a culture that employs essentially an oral tradition. The mysterious sometimes mystical images, so masterfully produced by local artisans are admired world wide for their rarity, beauty, and complexity of technique.
