This extraordinarily well-rendered mixed media (watercolor, gouache, pen and ink…) illustration measures 22” x 27 ½” framed; 11 ¾” x 17 ½” (sight) inside mat and is signed lower right John Alan Maxwell. John Alan Maxwell (1904-1984) was a prolific painter and illustrator whose works ae to be found in periodical publications like Collier\'s, Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, True, Redbook, Life, Cosmopolitan. Maxwell sold his first illustration to Colliers magazine in 1925 and won first place in a competition sponsored by the Society of illustrators, gaining him the accolade, “One of the top ten illustrators in the country”. He was a designer of murals, designed collector’s plates and an amateur authority on period costume.
