Vintage Japanese Shunkei-nuri Lacquered Display Set

Japaneselacquerware is one of Japan’s oldest and most endearing arts. Use ofUrushidatesback to prehistoric Japan. The most iconic colors ofUrushiare arich vermillion and a deep black.The process of lacquering is quitestraightforward – an object, often made of wood, paper or, more recently,plastic, is coated with multiple, wafer thin layers of semi-transparent Urushi lacquer. Urushi lacquer is filtered sap harvested from theGrateloupiaelliptica tree, morecommonly known as the Urushino ki. When an Urushi tree reaches 15-20 years of age,between the months of June and October,skilledartisans make precise, horizontal incisions along the trunk once every 4-5days.

Shunkei-nuri- is a yellowish, transparent lacquer made by layering a base of yellowgamboge with clearsuki-urushi. The soft amber hue and naturalfinish highlight the beauty of the wood grain beneath the surface of lacquer.While popular throughout 17th century Japan, it was apparently invented by 14thcentury lacquer master, Shunkei .

Urushi wares are often used as partof Japan’s New Year celebrations, but Japanese lacquer has much widerapplications in both fine art and everyday life.

Most works are functional, givingUrushia utilitarian as well as decorative purpose.
