Offered for sale is a Size 1 (5\" x 3 5/8\") circaearly 1900\'sJohn McLane U.S. Embossed Key Lock Post Office Box Door. The door is cast bronze with the original numbered key which matches the number on the lock. Glass is the original beveled glass.

In the year 1880, Hon. JohnMcLane commenced the business of manufacturing post office furniture, and three years later bought the mill property on Nashua street, thenknown as Fuller Mills. Securing the ownership of several valuable patentsrelating to post office box doors he enlarged his business to a considerable extent. In 1885, finding his factory inadequateto supply the growing demand for improved post office equipment he started afactory in Chicago, Il., where twenty-five men were employed, 40 remaining atwork upon the home plant. In 1888, having largely increased his facilities forrapidly producing post office outfits at home, and the lease of his Chicagomanufactory having expired, the machinery of that establishment was moved toMilford. Now all manufacturing is done in this town. An office and salesroomare continued at Chicago as a matter of convenience in the distribution of theproduct of his factory. A small business has become an extensive and profitableaffair. More than 12,000 post office outfits have been made and sold. They havebeen sent into every state and territory and into nearly every county intheUnited States. The business was never more prosperous than at the present time,and is one of the substantial industries of the town. Number of hands employed 1897,between thirty and forty. Mr. McLane also employs from fifteen to twenty handsin the manufacture of baskets of all kinds.
