Stunning vintage Navajo Sterling Silver Drum / Barrel bead Necklace
There are seven (7) large hand-made Barrel / Drum Beads
Separated by two sizes of handmade saucer beadsSome people describe the seven big, hollow beads on this necklace as DRUM beads and others call them BARREL beads... your choice.This necklace is well over thirty years old, I was buying Navjo, Zuni and Hopi jewelry at a small store in Santa Monica on Montana Ave. next to the Aero Theater. Unfortunately I don\'t remember the name of the shop... it was wonderful!I\'ve worn this necklace for years but, as I grow older, I find myself wearing it less and less. I often wore this necklace with a chain extender so that it hung even lower, especially when I wore it with a shirt with a collar. Stretched out the necklace measures just over 25\" long but the major drum bead hangs down another 1-7/8\" (including the loop on top). There are seven drum beads all of them with stamped with toothed arches that I\'ve been told are sun\'s rays and applied twisted wire decoration. Six of the drums measure approximately 1-3/8\" long and 5/8\" wide, the large central bead measures just over 1-9/16\" long and 13/16\" not including the turquoise (with the turquoise it measures 1-1/8\") wide. The necklace weighs 92g (3.2oz) on my electronic postal scale. There are two sizes of saucer beads; all of them show faint file marks from their finishing. The larger beads measure approximately 1/2\" across (they are handmade and they all measure very slightly differently!) and just over 1/4\" top to bottom. The twenty smaller beads measure approximately 5/8\" across and between 3/16\" and 1/4\" (4/16\") top to bottom. The handmade cones on either end are approximately 1\" long, 1/4\" at the widest end and 1/8\" at the smallest. The hook & eye clasp is clearly handmade.
The largest drum bead has three bezel set naturally shaped turquoise stones. They are a nice clear and bright turquoise in color with very little veining. They are set in saw-toothed bezels with twisted silver wire soldered around their bases. All of the stones are firmly in place with no looseness.
This gorgeous necklace, which is strung on sterling silver chain, is unmarked but I was told that it may be by Johnson Todacheeny so I did some research and found a number of necklaces with beads virtually identical to the ones on this necklace that were, indeed, made by Johnson Todacheeny. Going over the necklace with a loupe I found what may be an attempt at a mark on the loop of the largest bead... I have no idea where the turquoise set into the biggest drum is from but, again, I\'ve been told that it may be Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. I know that I was told who made the necklace and what the turquoise was when I purchased the necklace but I was young and foolish and didn\'t keep the information...Condition: This necklace has been worn off and on for over 30 years! There are a few small dents and dings but you have to search for them. In the last photo shows the worst dent... it\'s on the bottom of the highes barrel / drum bead on the left as you wear the necklace. PAYMENT: As per , high buyer to pay by PayPal.
