The History

These beautiful earrings features classic Navajo Nation silversmith work throughout with gorgeous handmade quality that you just can\'t buy anymore!

Antique/Vintage Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today.

Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure.

NavajoIndian silversmiths, working from 1870 to 1900, learned the stamping of Indianornaments from Mexican leather workers, rather than from the silversmiths whohad taught them. Stampings are usually hand hammered using a handcrafted stampand include traditional Native American symbols.

One of the earrings is marked \"Sterling\" for metal purity and the other is marked \"RV\" to represent the maker. I was unable to find any information on who this mark belongs to. The earrings display a lot of tarnish.

The Piece

The earrings each feature a round cut Broken Bow Turquoise stone. The Navajo Nation artisan who created the set would have hand cabochon cut and then polished the stones to perfection specifically for these earrings. The Turquoise is a gorgeous aqua green-blue color. One of the stones has a very slight brown matrix visible in one area. They are beautifully laid into saw tooth bezel settings in the center of the disc motif.

The earrings are crafted out of solid sterling silver and are completely handmade. The overall motif is a curved disc. The disc was created by the artisan using hand Repousse hammering techniques. Then, there are stamped stars in a line circling the disc.

The earrings measure slightly over 1/2\" in diameter. The Turquoise has an approximate diameter of 3 mm. The design includes posts for pierced ears as well as backings to keep the earrings secure.

Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates. Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don\'t miss your chance to own this special piece of history!
