Item Description:

This vintage sterling silver Navajo belt buckle has been beautifully crafted. Five Kokopelli are set onto a deeply textured background which looks to be tufa cast. This buckle measures 2 3/8\" across by 1 1/2\" tall. The buckle weighs 38.8 grams or 1.37 ounces. The loop at the back will fit a belt up to 1\" wide. It is signed with the hallmark of the well known Atkinson\'s Trading Co. and stamped Sterling. Especially in the 1970s, the well known Atkinson\'s Trading Co. employed many Native American silversmiths to create jewelry.

There are many legends and myths about Kokopelli. He is believed to travel from village to village bringing the change of the season and bringing rain for a successful harvest. The flute he plays symbolizes his music that changes the winter to spring. (Interesting note: Some believe that the Kokopelli figure found on rock art throughout the Southwest represented early Aztec traders, known as Potchecas, from Meso-America.
