Vintage Navajo Sandcast Sterling Rainbow Man Brooch / Pin Sylver Ray ShopThis is a great vintage solid sterling pin of Rainbow Man.Rainbow Man is a supernatural being in Hopi and Pueblo cosmology who figures prominently in their ceremonies and dances. The rainbow is a sign of the omnipotent grace of the Great Mystery in Puebloan culture. Native Americans lived peacefully and with respect towards nature for thousands of years. Rainbow Man is a protector of the people. This Rainbow Man pin was made in the \"old school\" sandcast method. Sandcasting is when the silver is poured into a shaped mold usually made of sand, then fired, and then cooled, then further smithed on the surface. It is an ancient method of jewelry making learned from the Mexicans. Sandcasting made a resurgence in the 1970\'s. This piece was made around this time. The pin is stamped on the backside of the head with the silversmiths maker\'s mark, a capital R in script which is the hallmark of silversmiths of the Sylver Ray shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico who have been selling fine Native American jewelry for decades. It is not marked sterling though that is not uncommon with older, vintage jewelry. It is definitely sterling though. The pin measures 2 3/8\" across by 1 7/8\" high. It weighs 11.3 grams. The pin closes with a locking rollover clasp. This eye-catching, cosmic pin is a great piece of Native American jewelry to wear with your denim and other Southwest pieces. It is interesting, well made, and in excellent condition with nice patina.
