Vintage 1978 Neumann U87 Microphone owned by Fleetwood Mac:
$8888.88

For sale is this Vintage Neumann U87 microphone. This is the firsttype which was built between 1967-1986 (no longer in production). It requires48V phantom power and has the standard XLR plug. Serial number is 31169, which, according to an email I received from Ute Scheibe (Neumann Service Assistant) dates to 1978.

The sound that this mic produces is beautiful. The mic is in fullworking order, all polar patterns work as they should as well as the low cutand attenuation features. Cosmetically the mic is in great condition.

Along with the U87 comes half of the original shock mount. The hemisphereportion of the shock mount is missing, but can easily be replaced. It is theclamp-on portion of the shock mount that is rare and true to this year.

Now for the good part!

I acquired this mic at going-out-of-business sale in EchoPark, California, a small suburb just North of downtown Los Angeles. After I took some pictures of the mic to post on , I noticed on one of the pictures some writingon the body that I could not easily read. Then I rotated the picture and itbecame clear as day! FLEETWOOD MAC !!!

I attempted to contact Stephen Paul Audio in Los Angeles to get somehistory on this mic, but the phone number was disconnected. So I GoogledStephen Paul Audio and as it turns out, Stephen Paul passed away in 2003 at the young age of 51.That led me to do a little more digging and I finally got in touch with agentleman by the name of David O. Brown. David owns a company by the name ofMicrophone Repair in Agoura, California. He refurbishes and repairs Neumannmics for a living, and has done so for decades. I spoke to him at length andeven sent him some pictures of my mic. He confessed that he had actually beenfriends with Stephen Paul and had taught Paul how to repair microphones. Davidtold me that he is very familiar with Stephen Paul’s work, and recognized theyellow capacitor up towards the head of my mic as one of Paul’s more valuablemodifications. He also noted that it was a common practice for Stephen Paul tomark all the bodies and heads of all the mics that came into his shop with theowner’s name as a precautionary measure to identify customer’s property. Thispractice is consistent with what you see in the pictures. Additionally, afterthis mic was refurbished by Paul, a Quality Control (QC) sticker with Paul’scompany logo on it and the word “OK” was placed directly over the “FleetwoodMac” writing on the head of the mic.

Couple all these facts with the fact that this mic wasmanufactured in the late 70’s, all this provenanceleaves no doubt that this Neumann U87 microphone is an authentic FleetwoodMac owned mic. I have this for sale off too, so I reserve the right to end this listing at any time. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 001+424-259-1121. Best Offers Welcome! Thanks, Jeff
