Vintage Ornate Denmark Signed Sterling Silver Plate Hand Mirror Danish Repousse:

This is a delightful vintage hand mirror designed with a typical Danish festive folklore scene, nicely crafted in a highly detailed repousse style. The piece is likely c. 1940s.
The whimsical scene depicts what looks to be turn of the century country peasant folks having a simple but lively celebration with beer, food and music. The Danes were well known for their love of home brewed beer, delicious food and frequent friendly get-togethers.
The hand mirror is signed on the front Denmark with the \'whale\' logo/mark of the maker, Hans Jensen. There is also a raised sort of cartouche on the side of the mirror, bit is too worn to make out the mark on it. I thought it may be mark of Hejl & Co A/S **, but can\'t really tell.
The mirror itself is beveled and in very good condition. It measures approx 4 3/8\" T x 2 1/2\" W and weighs 64.8 grams
Note:The silver tests positive for sterling silver(.925), falling into the 90-95% range with an acid test. This may very well be that the piece is plated in sterling over a base metal. It could also be that it is actually sterling silver, used extensively in the 40s during the war-torn years. In addition, Denmark was quite lax in enforcing any sort of requirements for marking sterling silver and you will often find Danish silver not marked as such.At the least, the sterling part is thick and of good quality. The piece has the look and feel of sterling, with a nice, warm patina. I don\'t see any actual loss of plating with under-corrosion peeking through, as we might typically see on a vintage plated piece. I don\'t really want to make a deep cut for further testing. I am just selling it for its\' lovely aesthetic appeal, assuming it is plated.
**Hans Jensen took over an established gold and silver company out of Copenhagen in 1919, naming it Hans Jensen and Co. In 1934 he acquired HEJL & Co A/S who specialized in the manufacture of silverware, with items of silverplate and precious metals. Jensen proceeded to build up the wholesale lines and manufacturing facilities and continued to expand. The company produced a variety of both sterling silver and silver plated products, with many items produced for wholesale and export. His successful line of repousse scene style vanity items continued for many years,in various incarnations, probably sold as tourist type goods at shops, museums and the like.
There are various maker\'s marks used by Hans Jensen & Co, including the original whale, as well as with/without the Hejl marks, HJ marks, etc.None of the marks were used to distinguish sterling or plate; they were used interchangeably, depending on the years, items, wholesale customers, export factors and take great care in presenting items which are thoroughly inspected, researched and photographed in order to give you accurate information and a better buying experience.
