Today\'s tribute to one of the best sellers in 1960s and my favorite: Pilot Elite pocket fountain pen from 1969.

The Pilot Elite is a vintage fountain pen that you may have seen online or used before. It is needless to say what a classic and authentic pen it is that made its mark until now It was first produced in the 70s as a pocket pens and was available in a posh 18K solid gold-nib metal-barrel version and 14K gold plated nib plastic-barrel version.

ELITE POCKET PENS: DESIGN

The defining feature of the Pilot Elite is Pilot legendary pocket pen\'s big cap, which works in a similar way to transform a small sized capped pen into a reasonably sized posted pen. The cap really is very long and so posts and closes securely. As you can see, the it’s almost as long as the pen.

Black cap and barrel. Nib is 18k and marked Manifold. Short pen with a long section that posts to full length. Cartridge or converter fills. Excellent except for some light scratches on the section and barrel end caused by the cap.

LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY:

Pocket pens are a genuine Japanese invention. These are pens with very long sections and caps, and very short barrels. The cap, however, fits tightly on the barrel when posted making a full size pen to write. Indeed, these pens need to be posted to use them comfortably. Pilot was the company that launched this idea in 1968, and the rest of Japanese companies followed suit soon afterwards. (Vid post scriptum. This is not correct—the first pocket pen was released by Platinum in 1964). Sailor released their version of pocket pen in 1967 and it is confirmed. This model is one of the 1st models of pocket pens that Pilot ever released along with Myu and others.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

This pen had been used when I got it in my hands. It shows some tear and wear on the cap, mostly. The adjustment between cap and barrel and cap and section is perfect despite 50 years of use. And that is especially important for the writing comfort in a pocket pen.

Very smooth fine nib in 18K M Medium gold. There is no indication of the actual point. The nib engraving only says “18K, Pilot, Script\". The ink flow is just perfect for this nib. The demands are easy to meet as the nib is very rigid.

This pen has 18K sold gold M nib and it really very balanced indeed. It is also incredibly smooth and wet. It goes to show that Pilot’s ability to produce amazing nibs at reasonable prices goes back a long way.

Since the pen made to 50 years therefore, there are scratches in the pen body or the nib may have rusted a bit. Please check the pictures for details. Please note that i put the pen as i put the history in front of you. The pen may look not new but you can surely be proud of having one of these if you love fountain pen and a collector of pens.

WHY SO EXPENSIVE & HARD TO FIND:

These models were only sold here in Japan, intended for the Japanese market, which explains why they are so highly valued in the west. Even in Japan they are difficult to find. But they are such tough pens, the ones that do turn up are usually still in great condition. These are workhorse pens.
