Vintage Russian Troika Sled Lacquer Painted Box- Man & 3 Horses

Vintage Russian Troika Lacquer Hand-Painted Miniature Box- Man in Sled with 3 Horses - high artistic workmanship, boxes are typically made of papier-mâché, using oil or tempera paints with an egg yolk base, painted with brushes having no more than one rabbit hair, and lacquered many times. This technique of mixing colors with egg yolk was used in ancient times by the Palekh Icon painters and is continued in the work done there today. This Russian Lacquer lidded-box depicts the \"Troika\" from the village of Paleck or Palekh, near Moscow, Russia. A Troika is a type of Russian carriage with a main difference being that the carriage is pulled by the three horses. This is due to the fact that these carriages pulled people through tough winter conditions for many miles and three horses were required to make it through the rough terrain. Hand painted around side borders and top the box.
