UNIQUE JAPANESE VINTAGE KNIFE

I do not know exactly what this knife was intended to be used for, it is very stout and heavy because the spine is thick. Beautifully forged and finished it is signed Masakatsu. The blade fromshoulder to tip is about 3 7/8ths inches long (add another 1 1/2 inch for the tang), the actual cutting edge is 3 3/8ths long and 1 1/2 inches wide, the total length including the handle is 7 1/2 inches. The spine is 9/32nds thick making it heavy (170 grams)like a clever, and this may actually be a clever or froe of some sort but not for cooking because its not only that itissmall butthere is no actual ferrule that wouldprevent food from catchingbetween the blades tang and handle. I am thinking a craft tool and guessing it was made first half 20th century. The friction fit handle is pinned through the hole in the tangwith a bamboo pin,the handle has a simple oil finish of some kind, and what looks like a furrule is just an alternate type of wood. The bladeis razor sharp and has a very beautifulwith anartful finish on the body of the bladewhile the bevels have a polish that shows off the hamon of the bi-metal blade at the edge like a Japanese sword.
