“The Story of Ferdinand“ is the best-known work written by American authorMunro Leafand illustrated byRobert Lawson. Published in September of 1936 by The Viking Press, as of 2019 the book has never been out of print and has been translated into more than sixty languages.
Wilbur Monroe Leaf(a.k.a.Munro Leaf) (1905 - 1976) was an American author of children's literature who wrote and illustrated nearly 40 books during his 40-year career. He is best known for“The Story of Ferdinand”, a children's classic which he wrote on a yellow legal-length pad in less than an hour. Labeled as subversive, it stirred an international controversy.
Robert Lawson(1892 – 1957) was an American writer books. His work was widely admired, and he became the first, and so far only, person to be given both theCaldecott Medal, for“They Were Strong and Good”(1941), and aNewbery Award, for“Rabbit Hill” (1945) although he may be more widely remembered for “The Story of Ferdinand”. In total, he illustrated as many as forty books by other authors and another seventeen books that he himself was the author of.
