PLEASE CONTINUE READING FOR SOME INFORMATIONON PROBLEMSTHAT VINTAGE DAWN DOLL CAN HAVE.

Dawn dolls were produced to compete with Mattel\'s Barbie dolls. Unfortunately technogoly then is not what it is today, and the materials used to make the dolls have in the past 40 plus years created a slew of condition problems. The worst of is the vinyl in the legs and head will chemically react in some dolls with the hard plastice of the neck, torsoand and other body parts causing them to melt.

The early Topper Dawn Dolls were made in Japan, Tiawan as well as in Hong Kong. The dolls made in Japan and Tiawan have problems with the vinyl of the legs chemically reacting with the hard plastic of the hips causing them to melt and stick togeter over time. This condition looks very much like someone used hot glue to stiffin the legs. Nearly all dolls from Japan and Tiawan have this problem. Some are slightly noticeable and others are extreemly heavy. DOLLS FROM JAPAN AND TAIWAN THAT DO NOT HAVE MELTING SYNDROME COMMAND A PREMIUM.

Some Dawn doll heads are smaller and made from a harder plastic material. This material will react to the plastic in the necks of some dolly causing the neck to melt and a ridge or ringis form at the base of the head.

Some dolls were made with hard plastic unbendable legs (Fancy Feet and the Kevin doll from the Dance Party Sets, Beauty Pageant Dawn andDress ShopDawn). The legs on thes dolls are veryprone to the Melting Syndrome when storred for may years with other Dawn dolls where their legs are allowed to touch their vinyl legs. DOLLS WITH HARD LEGS THAT HAVE MELT MARKS DO NOT COMMAND A PREMIUM.

Many if not most Dawn dolls have Greening Syndrome or green stains on theirknees and sometimes their legs. Even Dawn Dolls that have never been removed from the Box can have this problem.Greening Syndrome is caused by a chemical reaction of the bending mechanism moulded in side the leg withit\'s vinylcovering. The green color is caused by the copper or brass used in the mechanism. The boy dolls (Gary and Ron)do not usually have Greening Syndrome their legs tend to yellow with age, again a chemical reaction. There is no cure for either the greening or the yellowing. DOLLSTHAT DO NOT HAVE THIS DISCOLORATION COMMAND A PREMIUM.

The bending mechanism is very fragile and was usually the first thing to go bad on a Dawn doll. Sometimes bending it only a few times would cause it not to work. Knees should be stiff and the bending mechanism should click when moved. DOLLS WITH BENDING MECHANISMS THAT WORK PROPERLY COMMAND A PREMIUM.

The bending mechanisms were placed in the mold prior to injecting the liquid vinyl. Sometimes the extensions that allowed the mechanism to rest in the mold in place will cause what looks like a pinhole in the leg. I have seen mint in the box Dawn dolls with these holes caused by the manufacturing process.

Some shoes especially red bow shoes and the black boots will chemically react with the vinyl in the feet causing a transfer of color or staining. Some shoes will chemically react causing the feet to melt around the shoes leaving a ridge around the foot.

Reciently a very good customer of mine let me know that I was wrong about the eyelash hair becoming brittle and breaking off. Today I stand corrected. I wanted to see why some dolls had eyelashes and some did not or one side was longer than the other. I found some heads that were beyond salvaging (noses bitten off and dog chewed) and I cut one open with a pair of shears. This is what I found. The was a mass of black hair wadded up behind the face. Like the hair on the dolls head the eyelashes were also rooted and probablytrimmed to length (allowing that some dolls have longer lashes). At first I was satisfied but I noticed that when I put a head back on the body of one of my dolls one side of her eyelashes moved in her head. I deducted that the end of the neck can sometimes grab the hair wad and cause the eyelashes to go further into the head.

Model Agency dolls especiallyDenise and Daphne and to some extent Melanie and Maureen have problems withlight to greenish discoloration around the hairline. This problem was caused by the excessive amount of hair thatrooted into their head. This was caused by a chemical reaction and occurs on Mint In Box dolls as well.

The African American Dolls Van and Dale are sometimes prone to Powdering Syndrome. This is caused by a chemical reaction between the tint or coloring agent and the vinal and plastic of the body causing the doll to look like it has light powder on it. Powdering syndrome can be very light of very heavy. Like with Greening Syndrome there is no cure and it can not be washed off.

A problem with all of the boy dolls is that over time the paint used to color their hair will scuff or flake off. Most of the dolls that I have seen with this problem are Gary dolls but I have also seen Ron and Van dolls to have it also.
