It\'s getting more and more difficult to find antique clothing that is in decent condition, but this is a truly lovely Victorian bodice and skirt. It is in EXCELLENT condition. There are a few tiny holes at the back of the collar but to me, a silk taffeta dress that is about 150 years old that is still sturdy, without stains or tears is in super condition, even if there are a few tiny holes.
Any collector of antique clothing knows that silk taffeta is prone to shattering and disintegration and this is still in great shape.
Perhaps the most unbelievable thing about the condition is the lack of perspiration stains. It looks as though it was never/rarely worn.
By the late 1870s, bustles were fading into the past and getting smaller and smaller. This skirt has some soft puffing down the back but none of the \"explosive\" elements popular earlier in this decade. It also features a mere hint of a train.
I have shown this over a crinoline but that is not included in the sale. I\'ve also stuffed the sleeves to show the shape and detailing at the cuff.
The sleeves have no gathering at the cap. Rather they are cut similar to the late 1860s. However, by the end of the 1880s giagantically puffed sleeves were all the rage.
Fashioned out of black silk taffeta, the bodice is lined with a thick brown cotton and the skirt is lined with polished cotton. It has crochet-covered buttons and lots of detailing. There are narrow bias bands detailing the bustline, cuffs and hem of the skirt.
