Vintage YALE Univ. Stoneware Stein Tankard Early Royal Doulton LUX ET VERITAS:
$55.95
This is a high quality piece of stoneware manufactured by the early Royal Doulton factory in Lambeth, England. As such, it is a rare and exceptional piece of college memorabilia.
The pottery mark, DOULTON LAMBETH ENGLAND, was used from 1891 until 1956.
rOO is mark used by Jane Rumbol from 1885.
JH is the mark used by Jane Hurst from 1879 until 1922.
Ht 5\", Diam 3.5\"; Cobalt Blue
The blue finish is very glossy, causing white highlights from the camera\'s flash. There are no marks in this finish.
I believe this stein to be in excellent condition for its age. There are slightly rough areas where the blue glaze was wiped down prior to the original firing process to reveal the natural stoneware coloration in the highlighted and lettering areas. These areas are only distinguishable by touch.
The medal (possibly brass or bronze) medallion displays the Yale Motto. The legend reads: SIGILL : COLL : YALEN : NOV : PORT : NOV : ANGL
which translates to: Seal of the College of Yale, New Haven, New England
And LUX ET VERITAS for Light and Truth.
The raised slip ware lettering which encircles the stein reads:
