This superb \"Rowsells Patent\" stereo Graphoscope viewer is in \"as found\" condition and has not been repaired or restored.There are no splits or chips to the wood, burr walnut I believe, however there are two small surface cracks to the top of the platform either end of the central slot. The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina over the years, however, there the scuffs and marks that you would expect from a well used item of this age.All of the hinges, catches and stands work well, however, the diffusing screen appears to have been reglued in at some point. There are no chips or cracks to the glass.The base measures 41 cm (16 inches) long by 25 cm (9 3/4 inches) wide. This superb \"Rowsells Patent\" stereo Graphoscope viewer is in \"as found\" condition and has not been repaired or restored.
The viewer is based on Charles John Rowsell\'s patent of 1864. It has a platform hinged at the base, the two lenses at the front are for stereo use and are hinged to lie flat when not in use. There is a graphoscope lens which hinges from underneath the platform to the viewing position. There is a hinged photograph holder with a diffusing screen for tranparencies and the whole viewer fold flat for storage.
There are no splits or chips to the wood, burr walnut I believe, however there are two small surface cracks to the top of the platform either end of the central slot. The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina over the years, however, there the scuffs and marks that you would expect from a well used item of this age.
All of the hinges, catches and stands work well, however, the diffusing screen appears to have been reglued in at some point.
There are no chips or cracks to the glass.
The base measures 41 cm (16 inches) long by 25 cm (9 3/4 inches) wide.
