KONGE-TINN PEWTER FLATWARE FROM NORWAY

Put pewter on your table — and eat like a king!

This “Royal Pewter” has a pattern that springs from events that took place in Norway almost 1,000 years ago. The Viking period was something more than an era of violence and barbaric customs. The Viking kings surrounded themselves with artists of various kinds, and it was a point of honor for the kings themselves to be able to handle a craftsman\'s tools. The sagas tell us that Olav the Holy himself carved the dragon\'s head on one of his long ships. “Olav the Holy and his men” — the inspiration of this pattern — introduced Christianity to Norway. King Olav fought tirelessly for this cause, and gave his life for it at the battle of Stiklestad, the year 1030 A.D. He was later canonized, and churches were built to his memory in many part of Europe.

At one time pewter was the status symbol of such rank that the old kings ate from pewter plates, while lesser mortals had to put up with gold ones! This should at any rate prove that pewter takes kindly to contact with all kinds of food, and that it is non-toxic. The people of today do not put pewter flatware on their tables to prove that they can afford it, but because it is a genuine product of lasting beauty, with attractive patterns. This flatware can be machine washed, but certain types of detergents tend to darken pewter. Pewter can be polished with fine steel wool moistened in luke warm, soapy water. Handles should be polished lengthwise.
