Hawaiian Feather Lei Hat Band (Leihulu Papa)

Peacock Feathers

Exquisitely Hand Crafted By Leonetta Mills

Each feather is hand sewn to a felt band and her immaculate stitches on the back are covered over by a flap of fabric to protect the stitches from wear and tear.

It takes about three hours to complete one inch, with thirty feathers per row of stitching.

Leonetta Learned the traditional craft of Feather Lei making from her Aunt, Tsugi Kaiama whose feather works are considered to be the best. Tsugi was one of 25 artists from Hawaii to be featured at the 1989 Festival of American Folk Life at the Smithsonian in our nation\'s capitol. She was acknowledged as a \"living Treasure\" for her skill and for perpetuation of island traditions.

Leonetta and nephew Larry Kimura headed up the Hawaiian studies program at the University of Hawai\'i Hilo

Bands are flat and are sewn together to form a circle traditionally connected by a single thread through the linen end piece to a hat.
