Vtg SOLOMON ISLANDS 12\" NGUZUNGUZU/Toto Isu Head Carving: Inlaid Mother-Of-Pearl
Up for sale is a wonderful example of Nguzunguzu (Nguzu Nguzu) or Toto Isu head carving from the Solomon Islands. They are also sometimes called Musu Musu. The original purpose of these was a figure heads on war canoes. This one is holding a head--perhaps of his enemy. They are accented with a beautiful design of mother-of-pearl inlay. It\'s a little over 12\" at its widest and tallest and weighs about 4.5 pounds. It has individually carved teeth and the back has flange holes for lashing onto the prow of a canoe even though this was likely crafted for the art of the piece and not for a canoe. It\'s only missing a piece of mother-of-pearl over his eyebrow. I purchased this at an estate sale. It has a tag on it from an oceanic folk art store in Sydney, Australia for $390.
