Wonderful 1896 Hand Held Stereoviewer - H. C. White's "stereo-graphoscope" For Sale

Wonderful 1896 Hand Held Stereoviewer - H. C. White's

Original, ca1896, finely made, Walnut and Brass, hand-held Stereopticon Viewer / Stereoscope with quite unique features we have never seen before. This wonderful, hand held Stereo Viewer is a version of H. C. White’s “Stereo-Graphoscope”. It measures approx. 7 1/2" long overall (when fully compressed) and 10 1/2" long when the card holder is fully extended. It features an adjustable card holder with finely crafted, metal "sleeve" type extension connector, a folding, walnut handle and brass eyepieces that can be individually rotated to facilitate focusing.

This Viewer is very well made and the arm which holds the mount for the Stereo Card being viewed is adjustable so that the image can be brought into razor sharp focus regardless of the viewer's strength of eyesight. This mount slides smoothly in and out, traveling within a shaped, metal "sleeve". The eyepieces have small, brass "stops" that allow them to be rotated within a limited range. Please see the scans below for views of this oddly constructed Stereoviewer. While we have handled literally 100’s of Stereoviewers / Stereoscopes over the past 33+ years, we have never come across this particular design and believe it to be very rare.

The Viewer carries impressed text on the underside that identifies it as a “Stereo-Graphoscope” as well as extensive copyright notices from the United States, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, etc with the latest patent date listed being 1896.

This rare and fascinating, Hand Held Stereoscope is in excellent condition. The cowling / shade that surrounds the eyepieces is made of a rather delicate, wood veneer which is intact and undamaged and retains its original surface finish. All parts are original and well preserved as can be seen in the scans below. The Viewer is complete and intact and an exceptionally interesting design that we have never encountered before!!!

A rare and fascinating, ca1896, Hand-Held Stereopticon Viewer / Stereoscope of a very rare design known as H. C. White’s “Stereo-Graphoscope” and a fantastic addition to any Collection!!!

Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at buyers request. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% sales tax.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
