This is a beautiful portrayal of the Mother of God of Tikhvin.

According to ancient orthodox tradition, the Mother of God Tikhvinskaya was painted by St. Luke, and the Lukine icon saved Constantinople in the 1300s.A similar icon saved the area around Novgorod during the Swedish wars of the 1600s. Ever since then, icons depicting the Mother of God of Tikhvin have been revered by all communities undergoing hardship.

Measures 7 by 5.75 inches. Braced nicely.

This icon bears handwritten Cyrillic characters.

The paint is in magnificent shape.

One rarely sees one in this condition outside museums.

The reserve is small, a fraction of its value, just to protect me in case all serious buyers are on summer holiday or something.
