A little History...
Up for sale is a rare pair of 100% authentic and original WW2 AO Aviator sunglasses. The "Cool-ray" brand. The AO's version of B&L's "Ray-Ban" Line of sunglasses.Made by the American Optical Co. Located inSouthbridge Mass.These are the government issued style aviator sunglasses that AO manufactured under the Bausch and Lomb contract for the USN and USAAF during WW2 model AN6531, which led to the creation of "aviator" style of sunglasses we see today.
Description of the glasses in the sale.
These glasses are in very good condition. These are in wearing or display condition. The lenses on these glasses are made of dark green rock glass and are thepioneered "Anti Glare" type featured in all Bausch & Lomb and American Optical lenses. The Bakelite sweat band and nose pads arecompletelyintact with no cracking. The glasses fit comfortably and can be worn for every day use. The frames are in good condition. They are straight and symmetrical, not appearing to require any manipulation for wearing and fit comfortably. They are strong and sturdy and retain 90% of their original nickeling. The temples arestraight and thehinges move freely. The lenses are in good conditionhavingNO chips and NO cracks. The viewers right lens has a small scratch that isapproximately2mm long. It is faintbut worth mentioning. Both lenses have the expected light cleaning abrasions from use but Iwouldn'tconsiderthem scratches and they are in no wayvisiblewhen waring.The lenses are tight in the frames and do not rattle around. The reverse side of each nose pad has the AO markings. Overall length of the frames measuring from hinge to hinge is 5-1/2". The lenses measure 58mm across. The glasses come complete with their original genuine leather case. The case is in very good condition. The leather is supple, it has no pulled seams, no heavy cracking, and no holes. It's original button is intact opening and closing with a tight snap. Just think of what these glasses have seen through the eyes of their original owner. A true functional piece of WW2 history.If you are looking for a good solid pair of authentic vintage WW2 sunglasses you won't be disappointed with these.I am an experienced collector and seller of these glasses and have sold and owned multiple pairs in the past.
