100 year-old \"German\" Multiple Trench Tool
Keepsake Display with Built-in DrawerThis has been in our family since 1917 when \"Uncle Harry\" brought this back from serving in France along with a German helmet and bayonet and is 102 Years Old. - I ended up with this family item being passed down.
Standing 4\" tall and 5.25\" wide, approx. 2.5 lbs heavy - made in Dusseldorf and has been fired.
The neat little built-in drawer is cloth-lined, removable and has a fired bullet casing for the handle.Drawer is 2.25\" x 3.75\" inside diameter.
The legs are fashioned from bullets and shells with rounded curved feet.
The entire piece seems to be made from heavy brass, is solid & sturdy with all handmade welds strong and completely rust-free.
The patina looks great with natural aging occurring from sitting in our home on a table for the last 50 years without any chemical cleaning, solvents or rubbing. Before that it was on \"Grandma\'s\" table for 40+ years.
I am not an expert and have watched Antiques Roadshow enough to know NOT TO TOUCH IT unless by a qualified expert. The only cleaning performed was a light dusting or occasional soft wiping.
The \"German Multiple Use Trench Tool\" has always been kept inside the drawer.
It is a portable \"Swiss army knife-type\" utility tool that has five slotted tools that are held tight by inserting a tool into the corresponding slot in the holder that also functions as the case for the tools.
It is also made from heavy brass and has a threaded end to hold and keep tool tight.It works perfect and has no rust or corrosion.
I am unable to tell you exactly how old the German Tool is, but I can tell you it has been inside the drawer for over 60 years and has the stamp \"GERMANY\" on one end. We have always assumed they came together for nobody else in our family fought in Germany since WWI.
This unique item is quite interesting to display and will hold keepsakes in the little drawer.It has provoked many conversations and often we have wondered exactly where the round landed that was fired from this shell.
