About the artist:

Walter Bird (1903 – 1969)

In his time, Walter Bird was one of the country’s most distinguished photographers. A shy and reticent man to the unacquainted; for those who knew him, his sparkling wit matched his subtle photographic style and uncomplicated lighting technique

Bird was originally destined by his family to be an engineer. Instead, he completed his education by studying at the Richmond Art School and later in Paris.

By using photography as a visual notebook for his early study of ‘life class’ nudes Bird unwittingly established the starting point for his romantic visualisation of the female form.

As early as 1939, Walter Bird, John Everard and Horace Roye had decided that they were giving each other too much competition. To resolve that difficulty they decided to cooperate, and they set up a company called Photo Centre Ltd. They made their headquarters in a suite of rooms above Walter Bird\'s studio in Savile Row, and Eves without Leaves was their first joint gravures:

The Gravure printing process is the favorite of fine art photographers because of its legendary tonal reproduction qualities. One look at these and you can see why, the subtlety of tone is incredible.

There is a brief explanation of gravures available when you visit my store.

Most of my prints come (seal heat-press - wax tissue) mounted on conservation quality mat-board, in standard sizes and ready to frame - see the listing details for this information

The images in my collection come from a variety of vintage publications (folios, books, magazines, exhibit catalogs etc....many of which are extremely rare (and very expensive) They are the original Vintage published pictures from those publications, not modern reproductions. Where known, I always give the create date (when was the picture taken), and the printing date for the particular copy being listed

Visit my store for more hand-pulled photogravures, sheet-fed gravures, collotypes, relief halftones, and lithographs

These increasingly harder to find gravures will look amazing framed
