This sale is for a circa 1812-1815 papier mache snuff box with a War of 1812 printcelebrating thegreat battle victory ofthe U.S.S. Constitutionover GreatBritain\'s H.M.S. Gurriere, an event that electrified the population ofthe young United States. Many battle scenes and victorious American sea fightsduring this war were celebrated by printing the scene on round paper and placing it on these papier mache snuff boxes, the \"cigarrette boxes\" of the period. Shellac was then applied over the illustration. This is the only \"Constitution-Gurriere\" snuff box I have ever owned and it is also the only example I have ever seen! This view is ultra rare on these boxes. The title/descriptionof the scene is printed in script just beneath the illustration and reads: \"Engagement between the American Frigate the Constitution and the English Frigate the Gurriere. Surrendered after having been completely disabled.\"

The condition is very good for an item that was usually thrown away but has survived in thisinstance for 200 years. The pictures supply the description of this 3 3/4\" diameter antique. Please email any questions and thanks for looking!
