WATERMAN OVERISIZE \'SUPERSIZE\' 100 YEAR PEN -- EXTRA-FINE EXTRA-FLEX COPPERPLATE

EXCELLENT CALLIGRAPHY NIB, RESTORED & WORKING

WatermanHundred Year Penc1942inblackcelluloid with gold filled trim.

This is the largest Hundred Year Pen, the oversized, or \'Supersize\' model, Waterman\'s big cigar-shaped pen, the top of the line. It carries Waterman\'s largest nib, the 18 size, the samesize as the earlier Patrician nib.

In 1942 the FTC banned the pen companies\' long-term guarantees, and Waterman changes the name of its Hundred Year Pen to the Emblem Pen. Like some Hundred Year Pens found today, this one has an Emblem nib.

The nib is extraordinary. It\'s very fine and very flexible, perfect for any pointed-pen calligraphy style such as copperplate or spencerian. The hairlines are nice and fine, and the tines do not require very much pressure to separate. I\'d say it\'s very close to a \'wet noodle\' in this regard. It is possible with some concentration to write without shading.

It\'s very seldom that you find such a large Waterman nib that will do such nice copperplate. It\'s not so unusual in a 1920s #2 nib, but in Waterman\'s giant pen of the 1940s, it\'s a rare treat.

The pen itself looks nice from two feet away, but up close you notice there aregroups of scratches and nicks all over, as if it had been a cat toy. I\'ve smoothed these out so some extent, and they could be buffed out, but I don\'t have the patience. There are no chips or cracks. Actually if you look at that top slot where the top of the clip fits into its top rivet, you\'ll see the the corners of the plastic, often broken or chipped in a pen that has seen any use at all, are complete and sharp. The trim, too, shows very little wear. The Hundred Year imprintis nice and clear.

An impressive large pen, and also a real calligraphy tool.

Restored and working with a new sac installed. Length is just over5 1/4 inches.
