Early Civil War era edition of Webster\'s Dictionary. Noah Webster published his \"Compendious Dictionary of the English Language\" in 1806, the forerunner of his 1828 \"American Dictionary of the English Language,\" which grew from 38,000 to 70,000 words in the 1840 revision. This dictionary remains the standard American dictionary to this day. The first edition with illustrations, which are gathered together, with captions, near the front of the book, from pages llxxxiii through clxiii. (From \"abacus\" to \"velocipede.\"). In decent shape, bound in original leather with raised bands to the spine, lacking dual title labels as shown. Some wear at the extremities. Pages lightly to moderately browned and foxed, including the engraved frontis, unmarked lest for some manuscript on rear EP. Pages all present. Pages are foxed, browned and soiled in a few spots, but overall in good shape. Ads on EPs and pastedowns. Includes vivrant Pictorial Dictionary with many cuts. THICK volume (10.5\" x 9\" x 4\"). Still heavily in use for those who have discarded the internet for information.
