Old Lewis Carroll Character Illustration

  • Item: Old print featuring a character from a Lewis Carroll novel. Carroll of course authored Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) & Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. I assume that this is a lithograph but since I’m not sure, please look over the photos and see what you think. Essentially, the print is after a design by John Tenniel (1820-1914). Tenniel’s earliest woodblock artists, including Leighton and Millais, worked for a company called Brothers Dalziel. I believe that this example was not done by them as it feels 20th century, and is of a much larger scale than your typical book size. The print is matted but unframed. Attention International Buyers: The item may be too big to ship to your country... Please contact me for a shipping quote before offerding. If not too big, item ships via USPS Express Mail International, and with the price you pay declared on Customs forms. Your signature is required. Thanks for understanding.
  • Markings: Not hand-signed.
  • Age: Undated. Paper discoloration, etc. indicates a vintage date.
  • Condition: Used. Ideally, it should be conserved due to damage and/or flaws. Please consider the matting to be imperfect and a free throw-in.
  • Dimensions: Sheet size: approx. 21 1/4 x 19 inches. Overall with matting: approx. 22 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches.
  • Origin: Discovered in New Jersey.
  • Features: The White Rabbit is a fictional character in Lewis Carroll's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. He appears at the very beginning of the book, in chapter one, wearing a waistcoat, and muttering "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" Alice follows him down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
  • Background: Sir John Tenniel (1820–1914) was an English illustrator most famously known as a political cartoonist and the main illustrator for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). In total, Tenniel drew 92 drawings for both books in his signature style of pencil drawings which were then transferred to wood blocks. According to The Alice Companion by Jo Elwyn and J. Francis Gladstone, in 1981 the original wood blocks were found in a bank vault and are now at the British Library. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel. The manuscript was illustrated by Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) himself who added 37 illustrations—printed in a facsimile edition in 1887. John Tenniel provided 42 wood engraved illustrations for the published version of the book. The first print run was destroyed (or sold to America) at Carroll's request because he was dissatisfied with the quality. The book was reprinted and published in 1866. John Tenniel's illustrations of Alice do not portray the real Alice Liddell, who had dark hair and a short fringe. Alice has provided a challenge for other illustrators, including those of 1907 by Charles Pears and the full series of colour plates and line-drawings by Harry Rountree published in the (inter-War) Children's Press (Glasgow) edition. Other significant illustrators include: Arthur Rackham (1907), Willy Pogany (1929), Mervyn Peake (1946), Ralph Steadman (1967), Salvador Dalí (1969), Graham Overden (1969), Max Ernst (1970), Peter Blake (1970), Tove Jansson (1977), Anthony Browne (1988), Helen Oxenbury (1999), Lisbeth Zwerger (1999) and Robert Ingpen (2009).
