WHITING FARMS Coq de Leon
The Coq de Leon is theoldest known chicken strain specifically bred for fly tying feathers.References to these rooster feathers, and the special flies tied withthem, are found in manuscripts going back to as early as 1624.Therefore, the strain could even have been in existence for hundreds ofyears prior to 1624.
Historically the Coq de Leon strain ofchicken was cultivated almost exclusively in the Northwest region ofSpain, called Leon, thus its name; Rooster of Leon. Many beliefssurrounding these roosters attributed the quality of their feathers toclimatic, husbandry and even soil characteristics of the region. In.addition, even the phase of the moon during which the rooster featherswere plucked purportedly had some bearing on the quality of subsequentfeathers\'. Such folklore may have had some basis in truth, but thesebeliefs may also have been perpetuated in an attempt to discourageoutsiders from endeavoring to produce their own Coq de Leon feathers.
In the early 1990\'s Dr. Thomas Whiting, founder and owner of Whiting Farms, Inc., became intrigued with thesenear mythical Coq de Leon fowl. And so during the mid 1990\'s hesucceeded in importing Coq de Leon stock from 3 different sources. Forthe first several generations Dr. Whiting personally kept and cared forthese proud birds at his own residence, studying them and their uniquefeathers. Applying what had been learned from the genetic breeding ofthe other fly tying feather strains at Whiting Farms, Dr. Whitingembarked on cultivating and developing his own population of Coq deLeon. A new genetic tactic of selection for the highest quality firstnuptial plumage was initiated. This differed fundamentally from thetraditional Spanish methodology that relied on periodic, repeatedplucking of the desired feathers from only a few elite roosters. TheWhiting approach resulted in a much higher rate of genetic progress, due to the larger number of breeder candidates, and a more rapidturnover of generations, referred to as genetic selection pressure andgenerational rate, respectively. In addition the females of the Coq deLeon strain were also rigorously selected, for specific feathercharacteristics, pedigree information, and particularly for a verycomplex and attractive mottled feather pattern that makes them uniquelyvaluable as a source of fly tying feather. By the year 2000 the WhitingFarms Coq de Leon feather products were ready for market.
As with all Whiting Farms, Inc. featherproducts, these Coq de Leon feathers are scientifically cultivated tooptimize the realization of the stock\'s genetic potential. The peltsare washed and cured, and then graded as to quality and value by ourknowledgeable staff. When dyed, the demanding and involved dyingprocess is expertly conducted to assure excellent color, dye fastnessand consistency The 6 specific tying products that the Coq de Leon birds provide are:Tailing Packs -exceptionally good natural tailing fibers for dry flies.
Sold on the skin to provide a much greatersize range and value to the tier.Rooster Saddles - excellentnatural tailing fibers from the center top
feathers, sometimes called the \"spadehackles\". Also provides large size
wet and dry fly saddle hackle for Skater,Hexagena, Wulff and other
larger flies.Rooster Capes - someexcellent tailing fibers from the \"throat hackle\"
along the edges of the cape. Larger wet anddry fly cape hackle, and barbs
suitable for hackle stacking applications. Also great for Yuk Bug, Jumbo
Humpy and Sofa Pillow Flies. Not many hackles smaller than size 12.Hen Capes - round webbyfeathers at the top of the cape, excellent for
mayfly wings. Complex mottling and markingsin the mid and lower cape
feathers, unique and exceptionally good forall soft hackle
applications. A superior and much morereadily available \"wild\" type soft
hackle, excellent substitution for many gamebird feathers.Hen Saddles - from black tointensely mottled, and broader than most
hen saddle feathers. Excellent for larger wetflies.

Soft Hackle/Matuka Pelts -from the breast ofthe hens.

I have these in brown speckled, silver speckled and pure white. $15.00 each.

Similarly marked as the hen saddles, from black tointensely mottled, except longer and broader Matuka type

Hackle fiber length of an average Soft Hackle/Matuka Pelt

Coq De Leon Hen soft hackle with Chickabou – small 15 mm
Coq De Leon Hen soft hackle with Chickabou – Medium 18 mm
Coq De Leon Hen soft hackle with Chickabou – Large 26 mm
Chickabou fiber length 25 mm
Chickabou feather length 50 mm

The Coq De Leon Speckled Pardo Roosterneck will have an assortment of hackle lengths just like any roosterneck.
On the sides of the neck the hackle fibers will be stiffer thanwhat you find on a rooster saddle. Stiff fibers make good dry fly tails. The Rooster saddles have more hackles that would be suited to tails or clump wing caddis flies and clump wing dries.
Simply strip the fibers from the side of the quill, clump the fibers together and tie in as a wing or as a tail.If you tie woolly buggers and want a speckled hackle to Palmer the fly with, use the saddle hackle.Ifyou tie mostly dry flies, buy the rooster neck because of the stiffertailing fibers and the hackles in
the center of the neck would makelarger size dry fly hackles. The dry fly hackles would NOT tie smaller than a size 16.The neck hackles are a good choice for parachute dry flies. If you want a speckled marabou for woolly bugger tails and nymphs, buy the coq de leon soft hackle with chickabou.Iam not the person who grades these pelts. I do not say which color iswhich, some times they come to me
different that a previous shipment. Ihope you understand. On averageLight Pardo will have less speckling - silver and cream with specklingMedium Pardo will have more speckling - dark cream to ginger specklingDark Pardo has the most speckling almost to dark dun speckling
