Wilhelm Amandus Beer

Since the late 1860s, Wilhelm Amandus Beer (1837-1907) traveled several times to Russia and sojourned especially in Smolensk. During this period, he depicted numerous scenes of the Russian folk life. The present painting features a market scene with a group of countrymen with horses and carriages in front of hilly meadows. In particular, the figures illustrate Beer’s fine and detailed style of painting, which distinguish his numerous market scenes.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition showing light framing marks. Inspection under UV light reveals major areas of retouching to the sky (these in parts slightly discolored) and scattered touch-ups to the staffage. Otherwise very good overall impression with still fresh colors. The frame shows minor signs of use. The dimensions are 21 x 32 cm, and the frame is 24.5 x 35.5 cm in size.

After a training in figurative painting with Jacob Becker and in history and fresco painting with Edward von Steinle at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt, Wilhelm Amandus Beer became a member of the Kronberg painter colony. He made several trips to Russia and painted numerous scenes of the country and the people. In addition to some multi-figured genre scenes, Beer is recorded for his finely painted portraits. Since 1897, he headed a master studio for painting at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and was appointed professor in 1899.
