William Radford (1808-1890) was a U.S. Naval officer, veteran of both the Mexican and Civil Wars. Radford became a commander during the Civil War, in charge of the frigate, Cumberland. He was aboard the Roanoke when the ship was attacked and sunk by the Confederate ram, CSS Virginia during the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1962. He would go on to receive the promotions of captain and commodore and would be put in command of the armored ship New Ironsides which went into battle against the Union attacks on Fort Fisher. He was made a rear admiral in 1866 and would go on to command the European Squadron.This handwritten letter by Radford is dated March 5, 1870. On the official stationary of the Flag Ship \"Franklin,\" the letter is addressed to J.G. Walker of the \"Sabine,\" Naples, Italy. The letter is sent regarding supplies requested by Walker. Radford explains that \"the articles required by you cannot be furnished.\" It references a vessel that recently made a delivery of \"Beef, Pork, Apples, Pickles and Butter.\" The document is signed W.
