Horserod Camp. 1940s.

Horserod Camp.
Built in 1917, as a prison camp. Until 1920, it was a POW camp for Russian prisoners of war. From 1940 to 41 it was used for interned German emigrants that later was transported to German concentration camps. From 1941-43, it housed Danish Communists under arrest. From August 1943 until the summer of 1944, the camp fell into the hands of the German occupying forces and housed Jews and Resistance fighters under arrest. Many were then deported to the German concentration camps: Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück. After the war, the camp was used for the internment of Danish traitors who had collaborated with Nazi Germany. The last of these was released in 1956. The Danish prison services took over Horserod camp in 1947

Willy Buus Nielsen (1907- 1985)
Born in Randers, Denmark in 1907. Educated at the Royal Art academy. He travelled to Spain in 1936 where he fought as a volunteer at Spanish Civil War until 1939. On 9 April 1940, Germany invaded Denmark and was under direct military occupation. Willy Buus Nielsen joined one of the first resistance groups shortly after the occupation. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and put in the Horserod camp, located in North Zealand. In 1943, to avoid deportation to Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück, Willy Buus Nielsen and 94 other prisoners managed to escape by stacking beds and mattresses up against the perimeter fence and scrambling to safety. Willy Buus Nielsen fled to Sweden and did not return to Denmark until the 1960s. During his time in Sweden he met the artist Isaac Grünewald and became his pupil. He worked and travelled all over Europe after the War and exhibited in Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam.
