Here on offer is a wonderful antique French Gambier ‘I am the trueJacob’ clay pipe, dating to the 19th century.

This pipe came from the Trevor Barton collection, a world renownedcollector of tobacciana who died in 2008, he had been ammasing the collectionfor more than fifty years. Trevor Barton received the rare honour of beinginducted into the ‘Academie Internationale de la Pipe’.

Gambierestablished his workshop in 1780 and won the Gold Medal at the NationalExhibition for his work in 1849. In 1846 he opened his own store in Paris andin 1860 opened his London operation. WWI put an end to the expansion andbusiness closed its doors in 1920. Gambiers factory was located in Givet andwas reputed to be the worlds’ largest clay pipe factory. Certain competitorscopied the products and carried similar names leading to legal challenges andset presents in case law on trade names.

This wonderfulclay pipe is in the form of an orientalist character with a bushy beard, andturban. There is some nice painted detail on the turban that also has a bandwhich reads:

JE SUISLE VRAI JACOB

Thistranslates to ‘I am the true Jacob’. The eyes are glass and add real depth tothe piece. It is signed ‘GAMBIER A PARIS’ and has ‘JACOB’ on the base alongwith the number ‘1048’ and the additional makers mark ‘J.G.’

This great pipe has been made using traditional techniques. Thefigurative aspect has some damage to the edge of the beard which is normal. Thepipe evidence of use. The piece displays well.

The pipe is offered good used antique condition, it measures about 7.5cmin length and weighs 57g.

A great collectable.
