Famous Hiroshige Miniature!

The marvelous design is by one of the greatest, and most famous,of all the wonderful Japanese ukiyo-eartists, Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). In 1832 Hiroshige was asked tojoin a cortège that delivered a giftof horses from the shogun in Edo,present-day Tokyo, to the emperor in Kyoto. The trip was along the Tōkaidō Road, the 300-mile imperial highway between the two cities. It wasduring this trip that Hiroshige made the sketches he went on to develop intohis most famous series The Fifty-ThreeStations of the Tōkaidō. This reprint is from that series. This is awonderful opportunity for collectors of smaller prints. Miniature reprints fromthis series rarely come available.

It is truly a classic image from the golden age of ukiyo-e. It was made from recarvedwooden blocks using exactly the same technique – and with the same excellentdetail and rich color – as the original. Later edition prints like this make anexciting addition to your collection and are a wonderful way to decorate – at asmall fraction of the staggering cost of a first edition print.
