a large, wellcarved wooden figure, known as a

Siraha Salawa

representing a nobel Nias Ancestor Figure,

the non-nobel statues are called Adu Zatua and are usualy smaller and more simple carved,

this statue is made by the Peoples of Nias,an island in the Samudera Indonesia - the Indian Ocean, west of Sumatra

we see a seated figure, with on the head a very high and elaborate headdress / crown,

representing golden ornaments are carved: a stylized moustache, beard, earring / sialu, bracelet and necklace / nifatali,

the figure is in seated position, holding in his hands a cup and a peg / mortar and pestle in his hands, with clear male genitals,

exeptional is the way the toes are carved, very rarely seen

the crown, representing the tree-of-life, iscarved with different decorations: the crown base has trianglulair - leaf like shaped carvings all around, a vertical tapering central piece, reaching up towards the sky, with to one side a lozenge pattern, to the other palmleaf carving, at the very top a combination of those,

the lower wooden base is not original, but with age,

as one can see on the pictures, the wood has some cracks, inside those is some old filling and/or dirt, no worm holes,

age unknown, it might have been long time in The Netherlands, the way of carving makes us think it to be early 20th century,

provenance: a private Dutch collection, from The Hague, The Netherlands
