Woodland ScenicsLightweight HydrocalCasting Plaster *NEW* WOOC1201

This is a Woodland Scenics WOOC1201 1/2 Gallon (2lbs) package of Lightweight Hydrocal Casting Plaster. This is an excellent choice for model railroading or for making fantasy game terrain. You can create your own detailed castings, use it to build or strengthen terrain - and it can be pigmented to various colors (pigments available separately).

This plaster is perfect if you are casting blocks from Hirst Arts Castle Molds. Your castings will be much lighter than with other plasters while still maintaining strength - this can mean a difference of a few pounds in the final product if you are building somethign large. It does behave slightly differently than other plasters. I mix it to the recommend ratio (1/2 cup water to 1 1/4 cups lightweight hydrocal powder) in a plastic cup. Unlike normal plasters, as you add the plaster to the water it will not sink. This means you will have to stir the plaster into the water. You will see a light foam on the top of the plaster after mixing - this is nothing to worry about.Dip your mold in a mixture of water and jet-dry dishwasher additive and shake the mold to get any droplets of water out to help break up the surface tension of the plaster mix. As I pour it into the mold, I touch a hand-held massager to the edge of the mold. This vibrates the mold which helps the plaster flow faster while at the same time dislodging bubbles which float to the top. Let the filled mold sit for 2-3 minutes and then lightly scrape some of the excess plaster off the top of the mold. This will break any bubbles that have formed on top of the plaster (there will be a lot of bubbles on top - this is normal and will not affect your castings).This scraping is just to break those bubbles,do notremove very much of the excess plaster from the mold.Normally when casting with other plasters, after pouring you need to set a paper towl on top of the plaster to soak up water that comes as the plater begins to set. With Lightweight Hydrocal very little water will come out, so you may not need to put paper towels on top. You will nothurt it if you put paper towels on - so you canput paper twoels onif you feel like it. After the plaster has set to about the consistancy of toothpaste, you can begin scraping the mold to remove excess plaster. I recommend making 2-3 passes rather than trying to remove all the excess in one scrape. Make sure you use a clean, metal edged scaper and hold it at a 45 degree angle from themold as you scrape. This will provide you with a more uniform bottom to your Hirst Arts blocks. There is verylittle expansion of this plaster as it cures, so very few if any touch-up scrapes will be needed as the plaster cures.
