Capotes were introduced to America by French fur trappers in the mid-1700\'s. Early versions were called \"canoe coats\". They were adopted and modified (made longer) by the British military. Capotes were loved by Native Americans who found them warm but much lighter than animal hides. Wool capotes are water resistant, maintaining 80% of their insulative value even when wet. Today they\'re worn by mountain man re-enactors, buckskinners, and muzzleloading enthusiasts. But, capotes are not just for re-enactors. They remain stylish and functional to this day.

I\'ve been a fur trade re-enactor for 20 years. I personally cut, sew and hand-edge my capotes. Whenever a vintage blanket is used there may be some patina however, unless noted, there are no major stains, holes or odors. I also make custom capotes for buyers who may want a different blanket, size or who want to supply their own blanket.

This is newly made froma vintage Van Dyke Holland 100% wool blanket inexcellent condition.Van Dyke blankets are among the highest quality blankets made anywhere in the world and have been made since 1795. Superior thickness and fluff. Very good for cold climes. Gorgeous color, what I\'d describe as a true cherry red with no hint of orange tones.

The body, hood,cuffs, tails,and belt of the capote are hand-edged with black yarn.The edging adds a nice finish but, more importantly, alsoprotects the blanket from fraying. It has 2 large 7\" x 9\" inside pockets just below the beltline. Great color and warm capote!
