From a Tucson estate some years ago is this decidedly compelling 1917 dated WW1 artillery shell converted in Palestine as a lidded box, with inlaid silver and copper and with engraved motifs...this decorative embellishment and construction features fully indicative of a making in that time and place. There is further an etched panel inscription\" JERUSALEM / (Star of David) / (Judaic Script) / 9th DEC. 1917 / MADE IN PALESTINE\" to the front. The distinctive inlaid silver and copper scroll motifs coupled with the pipe stamped and engraved embellishment is reminiscent of some I\'ve seen on trench art artillery shells done in Damascus during WW1, though this box specifically says Palestine; an assessment found on line of another box with similar inlays (brought home after the war by a soldier who fought in Palestine) attributes the work to Syrian Jewish metal smiths who plied their trade in Jerusalem at the time of its conquest by British forces under General Edmund Allenby in 1917. That said and whomever made this, it is a beautiful reminder of the hard fought Sinai and Palestine Campaign of WW1, the physical capture of Jerusalem on 9 December, 1917, and a handsome example of historic Judaica. From the headstamp markings, this box originated as a fired German \"7.7 \" cartridge case for a Feldkanone 96 n.A., in use by Ottoman gunners during the campaign; this one came from the factory of Friedrich Niemeyer (the brass case supplied by Haniel Leuge Dusseldorf) in February 1917. Condition is quite fine with a beautiful look to the silver and copper and brass surfaces...all still very nice. Those surfaces were apparently kept in a polished state during the period, though they have now toned a bit to an attractive mellow appearance. All inlay decoration is present and accounted. There is a small very, very shallow bump from service low on one side, an unobtrusive mention for complete accuracy as can be seen from the pics. Usual and expected signs of period handling and display, are here part of its history and simply more evidence of the real thing. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition...for those who know, a really nice Cairoware silver and copper inlaid vase jar. Size is about 2 11/6 in. high (with lid) and 4 13/16 in. across the base; the lid is about 4 13/16 in. across the top. If you collect the material culture of an Islamic Middle East and especially such upper tier bring backs as this,, or simply wish this single artful indulgence to enhance the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.
