USN Green Air medal box...shows discoloration and some stains...there is a dent that almost punches all the way through on the bottom...named to a KIA Paul E Schilling and dated 20 April 1944. There are photos of Schilling on the net.Schilling was KIA 20 April 1944 and was a Aviation Ordnanceman 1c in the US Navy.He was from Clinton New York.
This grouping includes likely the rarest Navy medal box.
Item shown as pictured.Aviation Ordananceman 1st class Schilling was on PBY #08233 the night of 1 Oct 1944,they were making a night bombing run on Kendari Island. They were heavily damaged and crash landed near Umbele and Bungkinkela Island.Two were killed either by gunfire or the crash and nine survived the landing.They were reported to the Japanese by Islanders,captured and became POW\'s.While in the hands of the Japanese ,the survivors were all executed.The story of these 11 Brave souls is told in the book \"Shobun\".
