This is a 43 X 43 mm (1 11/16 X 1 11/16inch) arch-shaped, 35-gram (1.2 ounce) circa 1902 French Silver Art NouveauMedal/Plaquette commemorating the 50th anniversary of the foundingand beginning construction of the Compagnie desChemins de fer du Midi (abbr. CF du Midi), alsoknown in English as the Midi or Southern Railway. The reverse shows agreat view of a contemporary locomotive from the turn of the 20thcentury. The medal was sculpted by LeonDeschamps (1860-1828). It was producedthe Monnaie de Paris and is edge marked ARGENT1. It is in CHOICE AU condition with only verytiny areas of high point rub. The CF cu Midi was anearly French railway company which operated a network of routes in thesouthwest of the country, chiefly in the area between its main line – which ranfrom Bordeaux, close to the Atlantic coast, to Sète on the Mediterranean – andthe Pyrenees. In 1934 the company wasmerged with the Chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans to become part of the Cheminsde fer de Paris à Orléans et du Midi (PO-Midi).This is an EXTREMELY RARE medal and I have never seen it before.
