Alvin Sharpe designed and convinced the Captain of the Krewe of Rex that they would make a great new parade throw. Because they were made of metal, they would encapsulate the street pageant theme in a medium that would stand the test of time. The doubloon is undated because the Captain was uncertain if the doubloons would be accepted by the krewe members and if they were not, they could be used in subsequent years as well. Well, the \"doubloons,\" as they were dubbed by Mr. Sharpe, proved to be extrremely popular with krewe members and paradespectators alike in 1960...and the rest is now history!It\'s also the only Mardi Gras doubloon listed in the H & K \"So Called Dollars\" Catalogue and is designed as HK-581.Only 3000 of these 1960 Gold Aluminum doubloons were minted, of which 300 were dated for the King.
