Yellow Charles Eames SAX Shell Chair Orig. Label 1st Gen Rope Edge Herman Miller:

1950-53 Charles Eames / Herman Miller / Zenith Products 1st Generation Rope-Edged, SAX Base, Shell Chair in Yellow. (Description revised 10/22/15) A fabulous example of the famous \"Rope-Edged\" Eames Shell Chair with its original Standard Height Armshell X-Base. Right out of the gate, these chairs were in the Museum of Modern Art! Only the earliest production run of the Shell Chair had the rope embedded edge, in order to provide a radius with the comfortable \"hand feel\" Charles required. After reworking the mold, subsequent production runs did without the rope. Today, collectors primarily seek the version with the rope, as these are the obvious \"originals\" and have a very secure place in industrial design/art history. There are a couple of other interesting details to this chair: The (intact) red/white/black label, a rarer, later revision of the \"checkerboard\" label, and the handwritten \"SAX\" on the shell\'s underside. Both of these details are factory original, in unusually good condition, and relatively rare among the rope-edged shells. This particular chair may have been one of the first yellow examples matched to the SAX base, perhaps to be assembled for an early display of the base, though after some research, discussion and emails with former Eames/Herman Miller employees and other experts, this remains unproven. If Charles himself wrote on the underside, that would have a positive effect on the chair\'s value. This chair has original handwriting underneath in black wax litho pencil, obviously done prior to assembly, and from the handwriting examples I\'ve seen, does strongly appear to match Charles\' hand. It is reported however, that assembly line employees were known to mark the bottoms on occasion to aid in fulfilling custom orders. It is remarkable nonetheless, that this writing has remained in such good condition for 65 years, without someone wiping it off. Being of wax, it is very easy to smudge or completely obliterate with just a gentle rub of a finger. Whether in Charles\' hand or not, this original handwritten \"SAX\" designation adds a degree of historic interest to this chair while also confirming that the standard height (approx. 29\" to top of chair\'s back) base is original to the chair. The chair presented here is solid and completely original (except for the fresh set of boot glides), and has never been disassembled, nor does it have any damage, cracks, weaknesses, or repairs. There are some authentic minor signs of age/use, as should be expected, such as small scuffs on the X base, all of which can be clearly seen in the photos below. The color is bright and uniform, with one small slightly darkened spot in the seat, one underneath, and the fiber pattern is pleasing. (Note: Most of the photos were taken before the set of new glides was installed.)

The chair will be shipped as shown, fully assembled. I do not believe taking it apart to save a little in shipping costs would benefit the buyer, as the chair is more valuable in it\'s original factory assembled form.
